What does 200K Profile Visits really mean?

In 1999, 2000, 2001, Twitter made significant changes to the platform, declaring war on bots, eliminating 3rd follow apps, and purging thousands of fake accounts.

Now that all the changes are behind us (Well, at least they were before the new owner), I'm back growing my account, mainly due to some fantastic tools, primarily the "Suggested Follows" and "Who to Follow" lists. Alright, so there is one category on my Twitter Analytics that is shooting to the moon. Profile Visits.

Twitter defines Profile visits: Number of times users visit your profile page.

I've consistently averaged around 50K a month. But here lately, the visits are tripling.

Sure I've implemented some new marketing strategies but are they responsible for the tripling of

visitors to my page, and shouldn't that translate to an increase in sales? Well, let's take a look.

When it comes to monetizing Twitter, it is still a mystery. But that's what makes it exciting.

You're dealing with unknown unknowns and the opportunity to discover something new and be the market leader.

First, if someone visits a Twitter page with products, books, or services to sell, it should be looked at as an online store.

An online store's metrics are entirely different from a brick and mortar.

The customer can not touch or examine the products like they can in a physical store.

Most profile visitors are random visitors Lord knows where they came from, just dropping by to get out of the cold or the rain, I guess who knows.

But a closer examination reveals, Profile visits are a combination of bots, bot farms, program keyword searchers, algorithm suggestions, Black Button accounts (users who initiated the follow), and people where you initiated the follow.

The real people will glance at the bio and glance at the Pinned Tweet, and if it's a video most will not turn up the sound to listen

and speed read scrolling down the page, and oftentimes are multi-tasking with several browser windows open,

and because of all this, the majority will move on as quickly as possible without following or reading the Pinned Tweet or clicking the product link.

And others will "like" or retweet the Pinned tweet out of courtesy

without reading it because they see other people have liked it or like everything anyway.

Okay Okay, I hear what you're saying, but Profile visits have to count for something, right?

After all, the visitors are on your page and inside your store.

Yes, if you have a product that matches their wants, interests, curiosity, or desire, they might click on your link.

But what are the odds of the majority of 200K random visitors doing that unless you have a 'Universal Product that most people need?

Market/Product match is important in marketing strategy.

Twitter is like fishing in an ocean of 400 million fish.

Your marketing is the bait to find the right fish for your product.

So I'm dumping Profile Visits in the same category as "Likes" which can be easily manipulated.

Likes mean very little in the overall scheme of things except for public perception.

They are phantom ghosts, good for ad revenue.

So let us not be deceived or misled. I'm sure the people that know, know, and it's good for business. And you want to be on the right side of the knowing.

The Network Effect is that Profile visits must match the product you're selling. The only thing that really matters is... Link clicks to your website, landing page, or Amazon description page. Target marketing, creative headlines, and frequency will drive traffic.
